Hourly and by-the-job are different products and they suit different situations, so it is worth being clear about which one you want. By the job is right when the scope is definable. Clear this five acres, build this pad, cut this road. You get a fixed number, the risk of the job taking longer than expected sits with us, and you know what you are spending before it starts. Most owners want this and most of our work is priced this way. Hourly is right when the scope genuinely is not definable. This covers a lot of real work: an owner who wants to walk the tract with the machine and make decisions as the ground opens up, a contractor who needs a dozer for two days inside a larger project, cleanup after a storm where nobody can see what is under the debris yet, or exploratory work where the answer changes once you are into it. Trying to force a fixed price onto genuinely undefined scope produces either a padded number or a fight about change orders, and neither serves anyone. What we will not do is quote hourly on work that is obviously definable, because on that kind of job an hourly rate transfers all the risk to the customer and rewards us for being slow. If you ring us about hourly dozer work and the job is clearly a fixed-price job, we will say so. The other thing worth understanding about hourly dozer work in this region is that productivity varies enormously with ground conditions, far more than in drier parts of the state. The same machine on the same tract does perhaps twice the work in October that it does in March. Wet Beaumont clay does not just slow a dozer down, it changes what the machine can achieve at all, and an hourly job during a wet spell can be poor value for a customer through nobody's fault.

We talk about what you are trying to achieve before we talk about rates, because a fair amount of the time the outcome you want is better reached a different way than the one you had in mind. That conversation is free and it happens on the property. If it is a defined job, you get a written fixed number. If it is genuinely hourly, you get the rate, an honest estimate of hours, and what the mobilisation costs. Mobilisation is worth raising early: moving a dozer on a lowboy costs money whether the machine works for two hours or two days, so very short hourly jobs carry a disproportionate cost and it is better to say so than surprise you with it. On hourly work we check in as we go. If we are three hours in and it is clear the job is going to take twice what was estimated, you hear that at hour three, not at the end. Equally, if it is going faster than expected you will not be billed for the estimate. We keep honest time. Travel to and from the property is mobilisation, not machine hours. Breakdowns are ours. Time spent working out what to do next while the machine sits is not billed as machine time. For contractors we can work to your grade stakes, your plan or your foreman, and we are used to fitting into a sequence rather than owning it. Equipment & Capabilities

Our dozers do the pushing, the shaping and the broad grade work. A dozer is the right machine for moving a lot of material a short distance, for shaping ground over a wide area, and for pushing timber and debris into piles, which is most of what land work in this region involves. Where a dozer is the wrong machine we will say so rather than take the work. Anything needing precision beside a fence, a pipeline, a septic field or a structure wants an excavator, because a blade is a blunt instrument and the cost of getting it wrong near a line is severe. Digging, stump extraction, ditch work and any lifting also want a hydraulic machine. Tracked equipment is not a preference in this part of Texas, it is a requirement. Wheeled machines on saturated clay churn the top foot into material that will not compact and will not grow grass, and the customer pays for that damage afterward. That is also why we will sometimes recommend waiting rather than working. Two weeks of dry weather can be worth more to a job than any amount of horsepower. Everything moves on a lowboy, so the drive approach, the culvert and any low limbs or gates on the route are part of planning. A county approach that carries a pickup does not necessarily carry a loaded lowboy, and finding that out on mobilisation morning is expensive for everybody.
