Mulching and clearing get talked about as if they were the same service. They are not, and choosing the wrong one is the most expensive mistake a landowner makes on this kind of work. A mulcher cuts at or just above grade and grinds what it takes down into chips. The root systems stay in the ground. That makes it fast, it makes it clean, and it makes it completely wrong for a building pad, because you cannot compact a subgrade full of stumps and you should not bury organic material under a slab. If a barn or a house is going on that ground, the job is site preparation, not mulching, and we will tell you that rather than sell you the cheaper service twice. Where mulching wins is everything else. Understory reclaim under a canopy you want to keep. Fence lines and property lines. Senderos and shooting lanes cut ahead of deer season. Recreational tracts where the owner wants to walk the property rather than build on it. Pipeline and utility right of way maintenance. Anywhere the goal is to take out the mess between the trees without taking the trees. The mat matters more here than people expect. An acre stripped to bare Beaumont clay in this rainfall starts moving the first time it rains hard, and you see it in the ditch and eventually in the bayou. A mulched acre keeps a layer of chip on the surface that takes the impact, slows the sheet flow and breaks down into organic matter the clay badly needs. On tracts near Village Creek or Pine Island Bayou, where sediment leaving the property is a real concern, that is often the deciding argument rather than a nice side effect. Stem size is the honest limit. Mulching is efficient on understory, brush and small timber. Past a certain diameter it stops being the fast option and starts being the slow one, and at that point a dozer and an excavator do the work for less money. Our Process

The walk is about species and stem size more than acreage. Yaupon, Chinese privet, wax myrtle, greenbrier and young Chinese tallow are what the mulcher is built for and they make up most of the understory in Hardin and Orange counties. A stand of that grinds fast. Mature hardwood does not, and a tract that looks uniform from the road is often half of each. We also agree on what stays. This is the step people skip and regret. Mulching is a one-way operation and a marked tree is a lot easier to protect than to replace, so before the machine starts we settle which hardwoods, which fence lines and which bottomland edges are off limits. Cutting runs in lanes, working the tract in a pattern rather than chasing the thickest spots, which keeps the chip depth even instead of piling it in the places the machine happened to spend longest. Even depth is what lets the mat break down at the same rate and what stops it smothering the ground you want grass on. One pass is the goal and usually the result. There is no piling, no burning and no hauling, which means no burn ban to work around, no smoke complaint from the neighbour, and no trucks on the county road. On tracts off Highway 69 or Highway 96 where the drive approach is tight, that is frequently the practical reason mulching gets chosen over clearing.

The mulching head is a drum with fixed teeth that cuts on rotation, run on a tracked carrier so the weight is spread rather than concentrated. That combination is what makes it viable on ground that would bog a wheeled machine, which on this side of the Gulf Coast is most ground for a good part of the year. Because it is one machine doing the whole job, mobilisation is simpler and the footprint on the property is smaller. There is no dozer, no loader, no trailer traffic and no pile burning through the week. On smaller tracts and on anything where the neighbours are close, that difference is the whole reason to choose it. The machine is ours and the owner runs it. Mulching quality is almost entirely operator judgment, because the difference between a clean even mat and a torn-up tract with chip windrows is how the head is worked, not what brand is on the side of it.
