Almost every rural tract around here has been harvested, and what that leaves is regrowth standing over stumps. That combination is genuinely awkward for clearing equipment, because a dozer working through it is dealing with root plates and buried material rather than just standing stems. Mulching sidesteps that. It cuts at or near the surface, so a stump field that would be expensive and slow to grub can simply be worked over. Mulching suits recreational and hunting ground, sight lines, reopening old grades and corridors, tracts being opened for sale, and any pass over cut-over ground where the stumps are staying. It does not suit pasture going back to cattle or hay, because the roots stay. It does not suit a building site, since a mat is organic material and organic material under a pad consolidates, and on cut-over ground the stumps under it are their own problem. The stem size limit bites more here than on the coastal side, because mixed hardwood and pine runs larger than tallow thicket. A mulcher is efficient on brush, understory and small timber and slows disproportionately past that. On tracts here the sensible answer is frequently mulching the understory and handling larger material separately rather than forcing one machine through everything. On slopes and along drainage we set the mat heavier, because the upland soils here erode once cover is off and what leaves a tract ends up in the creek.
