The timber era laid a network of tram roads, rail spurs and right of way across this country, and it laid property boundaries alongside them. Both have been closing in for decades. That produces a distinctive job here: reopening a linear corridor rather than clearing an area. On corridor work we establish where the line actually runs before starting. For an old tram or rail corridor it means identifying the earthwork under the growth, because that raised, drained grade is usually the reason the corridor is worth reopening and destroying it while clearing defeats the purpose. The method is mulching in most cases, since a linear job has nowhere to stack material, the haul distance is the corridor length, and the mat holds soil where a corridor crosses slope or drainage.
