There is a local wrinkle to brush pressure in this town that does not apply everywhere. Flood water spreads seed, and Chinese tallow in particular is very good at exploiting it. The method depends on what stays standing and what the ground is for afterward. If you are keeping the canopy and opening the ground underneath, this is selective work with a mulcher and an excavator rather than a dozer. The thing that matters most is not damaging what you are paying to keep, because compacting or cutting roots inside the drip line of a mature hardwood kills it a year or two later, long after anyone connects the two events. If the ground is going back to pasture, the roots have to come out. Cutting or mulching tallow and yaupon leaves the systems in place and they return within two or three seasons. That is a legitimate choice if you intend to maintain on a rotation, and the wrong choice if you expect the job to be finished. Along fence lines, ditches and the low ground running toward the Neches, mulching in place is usually right, because there is nowhere sensible to stack material and the mat holds soil where water runs. On ground already scoured by the flooding, leaving bare soil is the last thing that helps. Debris handling is settled before we start. Mulching leaves nothing.
