About Firewood for Sale
The wood comes from our own jobs. When we clear a pasture outside Sour Lake, open up a building site in Lumberton or take down a storm-damaged tree in Vidor, the hardwood that comes out gets set aside rather than pushed into a burn pile. That means the firewood we sell is whatever hardwood was growing on the tracts we worked most recently, which around here can be water oak, pecan, sweetgum or whatever else was standing on the tract, in whatever mix the land gave up. We call it mixed hardwood because that is what it is, and we do not promise a species. If you want a load that is all pecan for a smoker, we will tell you honestly whether we have it, and most of the time the answer is that you are getting a mix. What it is not is pine. Pine is most of what grows north of Beaumont up into the Big Thicket, and a lot of it comes off clearing jobs, but pine burns fast, hot and dirty in a fireplace, and it goes to mulch rather than into a firewood load. What we sell as firewood is hardwood. Seasoned and green are the two things you have to choose between, and they are for different buyers. Seasoned wood has been cut, split and stacked long enough to dry down to where it lights easily, burns clean and puts its heat into the room instead of into boiling off its own water. That is the wood you want if you are burning it this winter, whether in a fireplace, a fire pit or a wood stove. Green wood is fresh off the job. It is heavy, it is wet inside, and it is hard to light and smoky if you burn it now. Where green wood makes sense is for the buyer who has a dry place to stack it and wants to season it themselves for next winter, or for someone who is going to use it for something other than a clean fireplace fire. Green is the way to buy if you are willing to do the waiting. You can tell the difference by picking up a piece. Seasoned wood is noticeably lighter than it looks, the ends are gray and checked with cracks running in from the edge, the bark is loose or coming off, and two pieces knocked together make a hollow sound. Green wood is heavy, the ends are pale or still show the color of the fresh cut, the bark is tight, and it hits with a dull thud. If you put green wood on a fire it hisses and steams at the ends. Humidity here works against seasoning, so wood that is stacked off the ground, split and left where the air can move through it dries a great deal faster than a pile dumped on clay under a tarp. Delivery is within our service area, which runs from Beaumont out through Nederland, Port Arthur, Orange, Bridge City, Silsbee and Kountze and the county roads between them. When you call, tell us where the truck can get to and where you want the wood dropped, because a loaded truck on a wet yard in this clay leaves ruts, and we would rather put it at the end of the drive than dig a trench across your lawn. Pickup is by arrangement. There is no yard address to show up at; we set a time and a place with you on the phone. Pricing is per load and quoted by phone. We do not post prices because the mix of what is on hand, whether it is seasoned or green and how far the truck has to go all change the number, and we would rather quote you the real price than post one and then explain why yours is different. Our Process
Ordering is a phone call. Tell us seasoned or green, delivered or picked up, and roughly where you are. You get a per-load price on the call and a delivery day, or a pickup time and place if you are coming to get it. On a delivery, the truck brings the load to the spot you named and it is dumped there. Have a place picked out that the truck can reach without crossing soft ground, and have somewhere to stack it if it is going to sit, because firewood left in a pile on the ground in this climate takes on water from the bottom. If you are buying green wood to season yourself, stack it split side up, off the ground, in a single row where the wind gets through it, with the top covered and the sides open. A closed tarp over a pile traps the moisture you are trying to get rid of. Supply follows the clearing schedule. When we have been on heavy hardwood ground the pile is deep; when the recent jobs have been pine country or open pasture it is thinner. If we are short on what you want we say so and tell you when the next clearing job is likely to change that.
Equipment & Capabilities
The wood is bucked to length on the job with the same saws that take the tree down and brought back on the trailer. It is sold split or as rounds: split if you want it ready for the stove, rounds if you have a splitter and want the lower-handling option or want to season it yourself. It goes out on our own truck and trailer, which is the same iron that runs to clearing and tree jobs across Jefferson, Hardin and Orange counties, so a firewood delivery can go out on the way to or from a job site. Because it comes off real clearing work rather than a wood lot, the pieces are not all the same diameter or the same species, and a split load will have some big pieces from a trunk section alongside smaller ones from the limbs. That is what mixed hardwood off a clearing job looks like, and it burns fine.
