Drainage here divides into three problems that look identical from the back porch. A conveyance problem means the path exists and is blocked, collapsed or silted. Roadside ditches fill with sediment and vegetation over a decade or two until they carry nothing. Culverts crush, separate at the joints or silt up until the effective opening is a fraction of the pipe. This is the most common call and often the cheapest fix, because the design is sound and simply needs restoring. We walk it, ideally when it is wet, because a dry site tells you very little. Standing water after a rain shows the low points, the flow paths and the outfall condition better than any survey. Photographs taken during a rain event before we come out are genuinely useful. Then we shoot elevations, because on ground this flat where the water can go is rarely obvious by eye, and we trace the path all the way to the outfall rather than stopping at the fence line. Then we tell you which of the three problems you have. The quote states plainly whether the fix is complete or partial. If your outfall is the constraint and we can only improve conveyance inside your property, you hear that before paying rather than after, because taking money for ditches that cannot drain is not something we do. Ditches get cut with consistent fall rather than steep fall. A ditch that drops sharply then flattens will scour at the top, silt at the bottom and be back where it started within a few seasons. Culverts get sized against the drainage area rather than matched to whatever pipe was there before. Undersized pipe is the most common defect we find, usually because somebody matched the last one. They get set at the correct flowline, bedded so the joints do not settle, and backfilled so the drive above does not develop a dip.
