The fundamental difference from the flat country south of us is outfall. Down there, a great many drainage complaints cannot be solved at all, because the receiving system has no capacity and there is nowhere for water to leave to. We shoot elevations and establish where water is currently going before designing anything, because on ground with fall the existing paths are usually carrying more than they look like they are. The design principle is to move water without accelerating it. That means gentle consistent gradient rather than steep sections, broad shallow profiles rather than narrow deep ones, and enough length to spread the fall out. Where gradient cannot be avoided, the channel gets armoured or check structures go in to break the run. The discharge point gets as much attention as the channel. Water released onto bare ground at speed starts a gully some distance from where anyone was looking, and that is where a surprising amount of amateur drainage work here fails. It gets spread, armoured, or taken to somewhere that can accept it. Culverts get sized against the drainage area rather than matched to existing pipe. Undersized pipe is the most common defect anywhere, and here it also causes upstream ponding on ground that otherwise drains. They get set at the correct flowline, bedded so joints do not settle and backfilled properly. Hardin County requirements apply to approaches onto county roads.
