This is a growth town sitting in timber country, and that combination produces most of our clearing work here: wooded tracts being opened up for houses. The soils are the first real difference from the Gulf Coast ground south of us. Sandier ground through much of this area drains better than Beaumont clay, which means more working days in a year and less of the wet-season shutdown that governs jobs south of us. We walk the whole tract, and on wooded ground here that walk is where the money is decided, because canopy hides both the stumps of previous harvest and the wet corner at the back. Harvest history matters. Parts of this country have been through commercial forestry, and a tract that was cut over and left looks like manageable young woods with a stump field underneath. That is a materially harder clearing job and it is invisible from the road. Then the method follows the end use. Building sites want clearing and grubbing with organics stripped off the footprint. Pasture wants the roots out or the growth returns. Recreational ground is usually better served by mulching, which here is genuinely good value because the regrowth cycle is slower than on the coastal side. Where a tract runs down toward Village Creek, we identify the bottom ground early and say plainly what we will not touch. It is frequently the best part of a property as it stands. On sloped or sandy ground we lean toward mulching over scraping wherever the owner will allow it, because bare sandy soil moves, and what leaves a property ends up in the drainage and eventually in the creek.
