Driveways & Gravel Roads Services in Fannett, TX

Farm drives out here are longer than town drives, they cross ditches, and they have to carry heavier things. All three change how one should be built. We cut, base and crown gravel drives, private roads and field crossings across Fannett and the surrounding southwest parts of Jefferson County. Free on-site estimate.

The distinguishing feature of drives on this prairie is what they have to cross. A drive from a county road to a house or a barn out here typically crosses at least one field ditch or lateral, and those crossings are where drives fail. A crossing that is undersized backs water up on the field side, which saturates the subgrade either side of it and softens the drive at exactly the point where it is hardest to repair. A crossing that was sized for the field's original water system and never revisited after that system changed will do the same. The second factor is load. Farm drives carry loaded grain trucks, equipment trailers, lowboys and tractors, not just pickups, and a build adequate for a car will not survive that traffic on this ground. The third is the clay. It does not drain, so water in a driveway base has nowhere to go and stays until it evaporates. Saturated clay under gravel has essentially no bearing capacity and stone gets pumped straight down into it. Around sixty inches of rain a year on this stretch of the Gulf Coast means that is a continuous test rather than a seasonal one. Imelda and Harvey both damaged crossings and silted ditches across this prairie, and a good deal of that was never properly put right.

We look at the crossings first, because on a farm drive they are usually the constraint. Culverts and crossings get sized against the drainage area they serve rather than matched to what is already there, and on engineered rice ground that means understanding what the lateral or ditch is actually carrying rather than guessing from the pipe diameter. Jefferson County requirements apply to approaches onto county roads and we confirm them rather than assuming. Then the drive gets built from the bottom. Soft material comes out rather than being buried, the subgrade gets shaped so water leaves it, and where the ground will not hold, geotextile fabric between clay and base stops the two mixing. On a long farm drive that fabric is usually worth it, because the failure points are dispersed and hard to get back to. Base depth gets set against the actual traffic. A drive taking loaded trucks and a lowboy is a different build to one taking a pickup, and building for the pickup then discovering the difference under a loaded trailer is how a drive gets rebuilt twice. The crown sheds the water and needs maintaining, since traffic flattens it. Ditches on both sides are part of the road, and out here they have to connect properly into the field's existing drainage rather than simply discharging onto ground that is equally flat, since everything out here ultimately works toward Taylor Bayou. Where clearing along the alignment is needed, Jefferson County burn bans and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern the material.

Why Choose TRP Land Clearing & Excavation in Fannett?

We size the crossings against what the ditch actually carries, on ground where the water system was engineered and the original pipe may never have been right. We build for the traffic you actually have. Telling us a lowboy and loaded trucks use the drive changes the build, and it is much cheaper than finding out afterward. We check the whole alignment before quoting, because on a long drive the soft section is rarely at the end you are looking at. Free on-site estimate, owner on the machine.

Driveways & Gravel Roads FAQ — Fannett

Why does my drive go soft at the ditch crossing?
Usually because the crossing is undersized or partly blocked, which backs water up on the field side and keeps the subgrade saturated either side of it. That is the hardest place on a drive to repair and the first place it fails. It is also common on engineered rice ground where the original pipe was sized for a water system that has since changed. We look at what the ditch actually carries rather than matching the diameter of whatever is in there now.
Can you build a drive that carries loaded trucks and a lowboy?
Yes, and it is worth telling us that at the estimate rather than after. The base depth, the material and the crossings all get specified against the heaviest thing that regularly uses the drive. A build adequate for pickups will rut and fail under loaded grain trucks or an equipment trailer, and repairing that costs more than building it correctly once. It is one of the few places where paying more at the start is unambiguously cheaper.
How long should a farm drive last out here?
Properly built, with the crossings sized right and the crown maintained, many years with periodic topping up and reshaping rather than rebuilding. What kills drives here is water sitting in the base, so the things that determine lifespan are the subgrade drainage, the separation between base and clay, and whether the crossings keep working. A drive that needs re-gravelling annually is telling you the problem is underneath rather than on top.
