On a long drive the ground is not uniform, and that is the thing that catches people out. A drive running from a county road back to a house here can cross prairie clay, a wet-weather drainage and lower ground toward the back of a tract, and each of those wants a different build. A single specification applied along the whole length either overbuilds the good sections, which wastes money, or underbuilds the wet ones, which is where it will fail. We walk the whole alignment rather than pricing by the foot for that reason. The clay is the constant. It does not drain, so water in a driveway base has nowhere to go and stays until it evaporates. Saturated clay under gravel has essentially no bearing capacity and stone gets pumped down into it, which is why local drives look swallowed rather than worn. Around sixty inches of rain a year on this stretch of the Gulf Coast makes that a continuous test. Crossings are the other constant. Any drive out here crossing a ditch or a wet-weather drainage running toward Pine Island Bayou has a culvert in it, and Harvey and Imelda damaged or silted a great many of those. A blocked crossing saturates the subgrade either side and that is where the drive fails first.

We walk the full alignment before quoting, because on a long drive the section that needs work is rarely the one the owner is looking at. The crossings get looked at first. Culverts get sized against the drainage area rather than matched to whatever pipe is in there, and undersized pipe is the most common defect we find, usually because a damaged one was swapped like for like. Jefferson County requirements apply to approaches onto county roads and we confirm them rather than assuming. Then the drive gets built from the bottom, section by section. Soft material comes out rather than being buried, the subgrade is shaped so water leaves it, and where the ground genuinely will not hold, geotextile fabric between clay and base stops the two mixing. On a long rural drive the fabric usually earns its place, because the failure points are dispersed and expensive to get back to. Base depth gets set against the actual traffic. Tell us if a lowboy, loaded trucks or an equipment trailer use the drive, because building for a pickup and then discovering the difference under a loaded trailer is how a drive gets built twice. The crown sheds the water and needs maintaining, since traffic flattens it. Ditches on both sides are part of the road, and they have to connect to somewhere rather than simply discharging onto flat ground.
