Ground here sits between prairie and bottom, which means some tracts genuinely have somewhere for water to drain to and some do not, and it is not always obvious which is which from standing on the property. Where a tract falls toward Pine Island Bayou or a wet-weather drainage feeding it, there is usually a viable outfall and grading can work properly. Where a tract sits on flat ground with no fall to anything, cutting ditches produces channels that hold water rather than moving it, and the honest answer is different. The clay underneath is the reason it matters so much. Gulf Coast clay perches water rather than absorbing it, so a low spot does not quietly drain downward over a week. It sits until it evaporates or until somebody gives it a path out. A substantial share of what gets described as a new drainage problem out here is an old path that stopped working during one of those events rather than ground that changed shape.

The diagnosis comes first and it is the part with real value in it. Grade, conveyance and outfall look identical standing in a wet pasture and only two are worth spending money on. That means shooting elevations rather than working by eye, and tracing the water all the way to where it is supposed to leave rather than stopping at the fence line. On rural tracts that can mean walking a fair distance, and it is worth doing. Where grading is the answer, consistent fall beats steep fall. Ground cut with a sharp drop that then flattens will scour at the top, silt at the bottom and be back where it started within a couple of seasons. A lot of effective work out here involves no defined ditch at all, just a slight continuous fall re-established across pasture that lost it, or broad shallow swales that carry real volume without taking ground out of use. On grazing land that matters, because a network of steep ditches is a nuisance to work around and a hazard to stock. Where there genuinely is no outfall, we say so. Sometimes the right answer on flat rural ground is to stop fighting the low spot, shape it deliberately and make it a pond, which turns a problem into an asset and produces fill for somewhere else on the tract.
