The clay under this town is why drives here behave the way they do. It does not drain, so water that gets into a driveway base has nowhere to go and stays until it evaporates. Saturated clay under gravel has effectively no bearing capacity, and every vehicle that passes works stone down into it. That is why local drives look swallowed rather than worn out. Soft material comes out rather than being buried, the subgrade gets shaped so water leaves it, and where the ground genuinely will not hold, geotextile fabric between clay and base stops the two mixing. On this ground that single detail is often the difference between a drive that lasts and one re-gravelled every year. Base depth is not the place to economise. Thin builds fail at the wet spots first and repairing them costs more than the extra depth would have. Crushed concrete is usually the sensible material here. The crown is what sheds water, and it needs maintaining, because traffic flattens it over time. A flat drive holds water across its whole surface. Where a drive drains matters as much as the drive itself. Water has to leave the surface and then leave the property, and on this ground that means connecting to the ditch system that carries toward Taylor Bayou rather than simply running off the edge into a yard that is equally flat.
