A food plot that ponds fails, and it fails in the season it matters. Cool season plots go in late summer for fall, and a wet fall on ground that holds water drowns them out regardless of what was planted. That makes plot ground grading a real service rather than an afterthought. It wants enough fall to shed water without enough to erode, a surface that can be worked with implements, and no low corner collecting what the rest sheds. The soils here make both halves of that possible and necessary. They drain better than the Gulf Coast clay south of us, so a plot with proper fall genuinely dries out. They also erode once cover is off, and freshly disced plot ground is about as exposed as soil gets. A plot cut with too much fall loses its topsoil down the slope in the first heavy rain. Acidity is the other local factor. These soils are acidic and lime needs time to act, which is why plot ground preparation wants to happen well before planting rather than alongside it. On plot ground we shape for drainage first and workability second, and those pull in the same direction more often than not. A slight consistent fall across a plot sheds water without concentrating it. A plot with a low corner has a dead zone that will not produce. We keep the fall gentle. Enough to drain, not enough to move soil, because freshly worked plot ground is exposed and this soil travels. Where a plot has to sit on ground that genuinely holds water, the honest answer is frequently to move it rather than to engineer around it, and we will say so. There is usually somewhere better on a tract, and a plot in the wrong place is a recurring annual disappointment. We raise the timing and the lime question at the walk, because ground prepared in spring for a late summer planting gives lime time to work, and ground prepared in August does not. On roads and building sites the work is the usual upland approach: move water without accelerating it, gentle consistent gradient, broad shallow profiles, and a discharge that spreads rather than dumps onto bare ground. Where brush has to come off, Hardin County burn bans and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern the material, though on hunting ground we generally mulch.
