This prairie was shaped on purpose. Generations of rice farming laid out levees, laterals, field ditches and turnouts to move water deliberately, and a field that reads as flat has purpose-built fall in it. We read the field before we cut it. What the levees, laterals and turnouts were doing determines what can safely change, and that is worth an hour on foot rather than an assumption. Then we establish which problem you have. Grade, conveyance and outfall look identical standing in a wet field and only two are worth spending money on. That means shooting elevations, since the fall available is measured in inches across hundreds of feet, and tracing the water to where it actually leaves. Where the answer is restoring something, we work with the existing system rather than against it. Cleaning and reshaping a lateral, correcting a flowline, or replacing a damaged turnout is frequently the whole fix and it is much cheaper than a regrade. Cutting new channels across engineered ground is the last option rather than the first. Consistent fall beats steep fall. A cut that drops sharply then flattens will scour at the top, silt at the bottom and return to where it started, and on ground this flat that happens faster than owners expect. We check the downstream effect before finishing, because on agricultural land pushing water onto a neighbour is both a practical and a neighbourly problem.
