We shoot grades, establish the required finished floor elevation, and look at where the site sits within the field's existing water system before anything else. On a prairie tract there is usually a genuinely better location even where the ground looks uniform, either on marginally higher relative ground or out of a path water has always taken. A few inches translates directly into loads of fill. The footprint gets stripped of topsoil and organics. On old rice and pasture ground that layer can be deeper than expected and organic material consolidates under load. Where the tract has area, we look hard at cutting the fill from the property rather than hauling it. Frequently that means digging a pond somewhere the owner wanted one anyway, which produces the fill and the pond for one movement of dirt. On ground where elevation requirements are substantial that is the single biggest saving available. Fill goes in and gets compacted in shallow lifts with a padfoot or sheepsfoot roller. On a site raised several feet the lift count is significant and skipping lifts produces something dense on top and soft below. The site is built larger than the slab, cut to grade, and the perimeter shaped to shed water with the shoulders protected. Then the drainage gets cut, since raising ground on flat prairie sends water somewhere and on agricultural land that is usually a neighbour's field or a district ditch.
