The legacy on individual tracts is not usually a changed landform, it is a broken drainage system. Ditches silted. Culverts crushed, separated or were simply overwhelmed and never replaced. That distinction matters because it changes the fix and the price. Restoring conveyance is generally straightforward and cheaper than owners fear. The first job is diagnosis, and here it means asking a specific question: did this ground drain before, and if so, what changed? Silted ditches and failed culverts are common and they are cheaper to fix than a regrade. Where the fall genuinely has been lost or was never there, consistent fall beats steep fall. Ground cut with a sharp drop that then flattens will scour at the top, silt at the bottom and be back where it started within a few seasons. On grazing land we favour broad shallow swales over defined ditches wherever volume allows, because a network of steep ditches is a nuisance to work around and a hazard to stock. We work from the outfall back upstream. Cutting the upper end first pushes water into a system not ready to take it, which after what came through here is a real concern rather than a theoretical one. Culverts get sized against the drainage area rather than matched to what failed, since a lot of what was overwhelmed was undersized to begin with.
