On a hunting tract the drainage that matters is not around a house, it is along the interior road and around the plots, and it matters in the wet season because that is when the property is used. Where gradient cannot be avoided, the channel gets armoured or check structures break the run. The discharge gets designed rather than assumed. Water released at speed onto bare ground starts a gully some distance from where anyone was looking. We re-establish cover on disturbed ground rather than leaving it bare, since on this soil that is what stops the work being undone by the first heavy rain.
