There is actual topography on tracts here, which makes grading genuinely effective and also makes it possible to do real damage. Water given fall and no restraint cuts. We cut, fill and level ground across Evadale and the surrounding country. Free on-site estimate.

Two things separate grading here from grading on the coastal flat. The first is that water has somewhere to go. On the flat country south of us, a great many drainage complaints cannot be solved at all because the receiving system has no capacity. Here, the ground falls toward the Neches and its tributaries, so a properly designed system actually delivers. The second is erosion. The soils that make this ground drain well are the soils that move once cover is off, and concentrating water into a narrow channel with gradient produces a gully rather than a ditch. The instinct that works on flat clay is actively harmful here. There is a third factor specific to timber ground: old skid trails and logging roads. Harvest operations leave compacted linear features that channel water, sometimes for decades afterward, and a surprising number of erosion problems on cut-over tracts trace back to a skid trail nobody thinks about. They can be regraded out or turned into designed drainage, but they need identifying first. Harvey and Imelda both put substantial water down this river system, and this remains the Gulf Coast in rainfall volume even though the ground handles it differently. The Big Thicket bottoms hold water long after the uplands drain.

We shoot elevations and establish where water currently goes, including along old skid trails and logging roads, because on cut-over ground those are frequently doing more than anyone realises. The design principle is to move water without accelerating it: gentle consistent gradient rather than steep sections, broad shallow profiles rather than narrow deep ones, and enough length to spread the fall. Where gradient cannot be avoided, the channel gets armoured or check structures break the run. The discharge point gets as much attention as the channel. Water released at speed onto bare ground starts a gully some distance from where anyone was looking, and it is frequently on somebody else's property. Old skid trails get a decision rather than being ignored. Sometimes the right answer is regrading them out so they stop channelling. Sometimes it is formalising one as a designed drainage line, which is cheaper than fighting it. We re-establish cover on disturbed ground rather than leaving it bare, because on this soil that is what stops the work being undone by the first heavy rain. Where brush has to come off to open a path, county burn bans and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern the material, and along drainage we prefer mulching to leaving bare soil.

Why Choose TRP Land Clearing & Excavation in Evadale?

We look for the old skid trails and logging roads, because on cut-over ground they are frequently the cause of an erosion problem nobody has traced. We design to move water without accelerating it. The approach that works on flat clay produces a gully on this ground and we will explain why rather than just doing it differently. We re-establish cover as part of the job. Free on-site estimate, owner walks the ground and runs the machine.

Land Grading & Leveling FAQ — Evadale

Where is this gully on my tract coming from?
On cut-over ground, frequently an old skid trail or logging road. Harvest operations leave compacted linear features that channel water, and once concentrated flow starts cutting on these soils it keeps going, sometimes decades after the harvest. People look for a natural cause and there is not one. Identifying the trail and either regrading it out or formalising it as designed drainage usually fixes the problem more cheaply than trying to armour the gully it created.
My new ditch turned into a channel. What went wrong?
The water was concentrated and given too much fall on soil that erodes. It is the standard failure when flat-ground drainage thinking gets applied to ground with slope: a narrow channel with real gradient accelerates water, and accelerated water cuts. The fix is spreading flow into broader shallower sections, reducing gradient where possible by using more length, and armouring or spreading the discharge rather than letting it dump onto bare soil.
Is drainage work more likely to succeed here?
Genuinely yes, and it is worth knowing. The limiting factor on the coastal flat is outfall: if the receiving system is at capacity during a rain, nothing done inside a property drains, and a lot of complaints down there simply cannot be fixed. Here the ground falls toward the river system, so a properly designed scheme delivers what it promises. The trade-off is that erosion becomes the risk, so the design is about control rather than just routing.
