Driveways & Gravel Roads Services in Mauriceville, TX

On a long rural drive the crossings decide everything, and after what came through here a great many of them are still carrying damage nobody has dealt with. We cut, base and crown gravel drives and private roads across Mauriceville and the surrounding parts of Orange County. Free on-site estimate.

A drive running from a county road back to a house on acreage here typically crosses at least one ditch or wet-weather drainage, and those crossings are where drives fail. Harvey and Imelda overwhelmed, silted and crushed crossings across this area as the Neches and the Sabine backed up. Many were left. A crossing that cannot pass water backs it up on the upstream side, saturates the subgrade either side and softens the drive at exactly the point that is hardest to repair. The second factor is load. Rural drives here carry equipment trailers, loaded trucks and lowboys, not just pickups, and a build adequate for a car will not survive that traffic on this ground. The third is the clay. It does not drain, so water in a driveway base has nowhere to go and stays until it evaporates. Saturated clay under gravel has effectively no bearing capacity and stone gets pumped straight into it. Around sixty inches of rain a year on this stretch of the Gulf Coast makes that a continuous test. On long drives, the ground also varies along the run, so a single specification is either wasteful in the good sections or inadequate in the wet ones.

We look at the crossings first, because on a rural drive here they are usually the constraint and rebuilding the running surface without fixing them spends the money twice. Culverts get sized against the drainage area rather than matched to whatever is in there, and after the flooding that matters because a lot of what was overwhelmed was undersized before the water arrived. They get set at the correct flowline, bedded so joints do not settle and backfilled properly. Then the drive gets built from the bottom, section by section. Soft material comes out rather than being buried, the subgrade gets shaped so water leaves it, and where the ground will not hold, geotextile fabric between clay and base stops the two mixing. On a long drive that fabric usually earns its place because the failure points are dispersed and awkward to get back to. Base depth gets set against the actual traffic. Tell us if a lowboy or loaded trucks use the drive, because building for a pickup and finding out under a loaded trailer means building twice. The crown sheds water and needs maintaining since traffic flattens it, and the side ditches have to connect into something rather than discharging onto ground that is equally flat. Orange County requirements apply to approaches onto county roads, and where clearing along the alignment is needed, county burn bans and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern the material.

Why Choose TRP Land Clearing & Excavation in Mauriceville?

We check every crossing rather than only the one at the road. On drives here that is where the failures start and a lot of them are still carrying flood damage. We price the drive by section rather than by the foot, because the ground varies along a long run and one specification is wrong somewhere. We build for the traffic you actually have. Free on-site estimate, owner walks the drive and runs the machine.

Driveways & Gravel Roads FAQ — Mauriceville

Why does my drive go soft at the crossing?
Usually because the crossing is undersized or partly blocked, which backs water up on the upstream side and keeps the subgrade saturated either side of it. That is the hardest place on a drive to repair and the first place it fails. After Harvey and Imelda a great many crossings around here were silted, crushed or overwhelmed and never properly put right. We look at what the ditch actually carries rather than matching the pipe that happens to be in place.
Do I have to rebuild the whole drive?
Usually not, and it is worth establishing before anyone quotes a full rebuild. On a long rural drive the ground varies along its length, so a drive can be sound for most of its run and failing in two or three specific spots, typically at crossings and on lower ground. We walk the whole alignment, identify what is genuinely failing and price those sections rather than defaulting to the largest job available.
Can you build a drive that carries a lowboy?
Yes, and it is worth telling us at the estimate rather than afterward. Base depth, material and crossings all get specified against the heaviest thing that regularly uses the drive. A build adequate for pickups will rut and fail under loaded trucks or an equipment trailer, and repairing that costs more than building it correctly once. It is one of the few places where paying more at the start is unambiguously cheaper over the life of the drive.
