Farm drives out here cross the field's water system, and those crossings are where drives fail rather than anywhere in the middle. We cut, base and crown gravel drives, private roads and field crossings across Winnie and the surrounding parts of Chambers County. Free on-site estimate.

A drive from a county road to a house or a barn on this prairie typically crosses at least one field ditch or lateral, and on rice ground those are part of an engineered system rather than incidental features. A crossing sized for the field's original water arrangement, and never revisited when that arrangement changed, backs water up on the field side. That saturates the subgrade either side and softens the drive at exactly the point that is hardest to repair. The second factor is load. Farm drives here carry loaded grain trucks, equipment trailers, lowboys and tractors, not just pickups, and a build adequate for a car will not survive that traffic on this ground. The third is the clay. It does not drain, so water in a driveway base has nowhere to go and stays until it evaporates. Saturated clay under gravel has essentially no bearing capacity and stone gets pumped straight down into it. Around sixty inches of rain a year on this stretch of the Gulf Coast makes that a continuous test. Imelda and Harvey both damaged crossings and silted ditches across this prairie, and much of it was never properly put right. Interstate 10 and Highway 73 cross this country, and an approach onto a state route brings TxDOT requirements rather than county ones.

We look at the crossings first, because on a farm drive here they are usually the constraint. Crossings get sized against the drainage area the ditch actually serves rather than matched to what is in there, and on engineered rice ground that means understanding what the lateral is carrying rather than guessing from the pipe diameter. We establish whether the approach is governed by the county or by TxDOT before anything is built, since a state route approach brings requirements covering sight distance, geometry and the tie-in to the highway ditch. Then the drive gets built from the bottom. Soft material comes out rather than being buried, the subgrade gets shaped so water leaves it, and where the ground will not hold, geotextile fabric between clay and base stops the two mixing. On a long farm drive that fabric usually earns its place because the failure points are dispersed and hard to get back to. Base depth gets set against the actual traffic. Tell us if loaded trucks and a lowboy use the drive, because building for a pickup and discovering the difference under a loaded trailer means building twice. The crown sheds water and needs maintaining since traffic flattens it, and the side ditches have to connect properly into the field's existing drainage rather than discharging onto ground that is equally flat. Chambers County burn bans and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern material cleared along the alignment.

Why Choose TRP Land Clearing & Excavation in Winnie?

We size crossings against what the ditch actually carries, on ground where the water system was engineered and the original pipe may never have been right for the current arrangement. We build for the traffic you actually have rather than for an average drive, since a grain truck is a different requirement to a pickup. We establish who governs the approach before building it. Free on-site estimate, owner walks the drive and runs the machine.

Driveways & Gravel Roads FAQ — Winnie

Why does my drive go soft at the ditch crossing?
Usually because the crossing is undersized or partly blocked, which backs water up on the field side and keeps the subgrade saturated either side of it. That is the hardest place on a drive to repair and the first place it fails. It is common on engineered rice ground where the original pipe was sized for a water arrangement that has since changed, and Imelda and Harvey damaged a great many crossings that were never properly put right.
Can you build a drive that carries loaded trucks?
Yes, and it is worth telling us at the estimate rather than after. Base depth, material and crossings all get specified against the heaviest thing that regularly uses the drive. A build adequate for pickups will rut and fail under loaded grain trucks or an equipment trailer, and repairing that costs more than building it correctly once. It is one of the few places where paying more at the start is unambiguously cheaper.
Do I need a permit for the approach?
It depends what you are taking access from. Onto a county road, Chambers County requirements apply including culvert sizing. Onto a state route such as Highway 73 or the Interstate 10 frontage, TxDOT governs instead, covering sight distance, geometry, culvert and the tie-in to the highway ditch. It is worth establishing before building, because an approach that was not permitted correctly can have to be modified or moved.
