Buna is about twenty-seven miles north of us on Highway 96, up where the piney woods take over properly. This is timber and hunting country, the tracts are large, and the work here is about opening ground up and keeping it that way rather than clearing it flat.

We clear and mulch acreage, work timber tracts, cut lanes and food plots, dig ponds and build pads and roads throughout Buna and the surrounding country. Free on-site estimates, owner on every job.

Buna sits on the southern shoulder of the Big Thicket and the land shows it. The species mix here runs to mixed hardwood and pine rather than the Chinese tallow monoculture that takes over on the coastal side, the soils carry equipment better than the heavy Gulf Coast clay south of us, and the drainages off this country feed south toward the Neches, and the tracts are big enough that most jobs are measured in tens of acres rather than in lots.

Commercial forestry has been through most of this country, often more than once, and that history is the single biggest variable on a clearing price up here. A cut-over tract looks like open young woods from the road and has a stump under a large share of it, buried under fifteen or twenty years of regrowth. That is a materially different job to clearing standing understory and the difference does not appear until iron is in it. We walk tracts here properly, including the back corner, and we say what previous harvest means for the number rather than discovering it together on day two.

Recreational and hunting property is the dominant category around Buna, and that work runs on a calendar that starts far earlier than most people call. Lanes want cutting in spring or early summer so the ground settles and the deer readjust well before anybody is in a stand. Plot ground wants preparing ahead of a late summer planting, and lime in these acidic soils needs time to act, which pushes the whole schedule earlier again. An owner ringing in October wanting lanes cut and plots planted properly has generally left it too late, and we would rather book them for spring than take the money and disappoint them.

Lane layout is where most of the value sits and it costs nothing extra to do properly. Lanes cut along property lines because they are easy to lay out look impressive from the air and see very little movement. Lanes that follow the edge of cover, connect bedding to feeding, or cross a natural funnel between two thickets do the work. Orientation matters more than length, since an east to west lane puts the sun in your eyes at exactly the hours you are most likely to be hunting.

Mulching is what we recommend most often on this ground and it suits the country well. It leaves no burn piles in the middle of a tract you are trying to hunt, it puts down a mat that holds soil on slopes and along drainage, and regrowth up here is genuinely slower than it is closer to the coast, which makes a mulching rotation good value rather than a treadmill. We are still explicit that it is a rotation.

The drainages and creek bottoms running through these tracts want identifying before anything is cleared near them. Bottomland here can carry wetland character and Section 404 jurisdiction, and clearing inside it without a delineation is how an owner ends up in a conversation with the Corps of Engineers Galveston District. It is also usually the most valuable part of a hunting tract exactly as it stands. Harvey and Imelda both put substantial water through this country and the low ground takes a long time to give it back.

Burning gets settled before the job rather than during it, since TCEQ outdoor burning rules apply regardless of any local ban and county positions shift through the year. Where burning is unavailable we price mulching or haul-off so the schedule holds.

Access is the usual rural constraint in a bigger form out here. Long drives, old crossings, a wet-weather drainage somewhere between the gate and the work, and an approach that has to take a loaded lowboy before any equipment reaches the job at all.
