A great deal of the land up here has been held and unmanaged for a long time, frequently by owners who live elsewhere. As a first pass on an unknown tract, we mulch to open it rather than to a finished standard, which is quicker and cheaper and gives you a property you can walk and plan on. What that pass reveals is worth having: where the boundaries actually run, where the wet ground is, whether there is an old road worth reopening, and whether the tract was cut over and carries a stump field. On recreational ground the subsequent work is lanes, plot ground and access, and that runs on a calendar starting in spring rather than autumn. The stem size limit bites here because mixed hardwood and pine runs larger than tallow thicket. Frequently the right answer is mulching the understory and handling larger material separately rather than forcing one machine through everything. On cut-over ground, mulching over old stumps is legitimate and much cheaper where the ground is going to be recreational rather than productive. We stop at wetland ground.
