This ground has real fall, which is an advantage over the flat country south of us where a great many drainage complaints cannot be solved at all. Water has somewhere to go. We look for what started an erosion problem before designing a fix, because on tracts here it is usually a linear feature nobody thinks about: an old skid trail, a road cut, or a route pushed through without drainage. Stabilising an active gully means reducing velocity rather than increasing capacity. Broader and shallower rather than deeper and narrower, gentler gradient using more length, check structures to break the run where the fall cannot be reduced, and cover re-established so the surface is not exposed. On new work the same principle applies from the start: move water without accelerating it, and design the discharge rather than pointing a channel downhill and stopping at the boundary. Water released at speed onto bare ground starts a gully some distance from where anyone was looking. On plot ground the aim is enough fall to shed water without enough to move freshly worked soil, since disced ground is about as exposed as soil gets. We re-establish cover on disturbed ground rather than leaving it bare, because on this soil that is what stops the work being undone by the first heavy rain. We stop where wetland ground starts. Bottomland here carries wetland character and channel work inside it is not something to judge by eye. At this distance mobilisation is a real cost, so work needs enough scale to carry the move, and we say so rather than padding a quote.
