Organic material, old fill, a buried stump or a filled slough consolidates under load and takes the slab with it, and none of it is visible from the surface. Fill goes in and gets compacted in shallow lifts. Dumping three feet of clay and running a machine over the top produces a pad dense on top and soft underneath, which will settle. Clay wants a padfoot or sheepsfoot roller kneading from the bottom of each lift up, not a smooth drum sealing the surface. Moisture is the other half of compaction and the window on this stretch of the Gulf Coast is genuinely narrow, so sometimes the right answer is waiting rather than building something that will not hold. Material choice is worth a straight conversation. Local clay is cheap and abundant and works when placed properly. Select fill has lower plasticity and moves less under a slab over the life of a building, and it costs more because it is hauled. We price both and say what the difference actually buys rather than defaulting to one. The pad gets built larger than the slab in every direction so the edges have a shoulder, then cut to grade with the perimeter shaped so water sheets away on every side. Then we cut whatever drainage the raised ground now requires, because a pad is a dam and raising one changes where water goes.
