A drive on ground with a high water table is a different engineering problem to a drive on dry clay. The water is not just getting in from above, it is already there from below. We build and repair drives and approaches across Bridge City and the surrounding parts of Orange County. Free on-site estimate.

The water table here is close to the surface, and on the lower parts of this town it is close enough that excavating any depth finds water rather than dry material. That changes the standard approach. On most ground, building a drive means getting water out of the subgrade and keeping it out. Here, part of the subgrade may be permanently at or near saturation regardless of what happens on the surface, so the strategy shifts from drying the ground to building above it and separating from it. The practical consequences are that raising the drive profile above surrounding grade matters more here than base depth, that separation between base and subgrade is essential rather than optional, and that a drive built by excavating down into the ground is a drive built into water. On top of that is the usual coastal clay behaviour: it does not drain, so surface water that does get into a base stays until it evaporates. Around sixty inches of rain a year on this stretch of the Gulf Coast, plus repeated flooding from Rita, Harvey and Imelda, means drives here get tested hard. Salt from surge also affects reinforcement and any concrete work, which is worth knowing on a slab drive.

We look at the water table before designing, because on this ground it determines the whole approach and it varies within short distances. Where it is high, the drive gets built up rather than cut in. Raising the running surface above surrounding grade means the base sits above the saturated zone rather than in it, and that single decision does more for longevity here than any amount of additional depth. Separation is essential. Geotextile between the subgrade and the base stops the two mixing, which on saturated clay is the mechanism by which base material disappears. On this ground we treat it as standard rather than as an upgrade. The approach and its culvert get checked, since a great many across this town were silted, crushed or overtopped during Harvey and Imelda and were never properly repaired. A blocked culvert holds water in the ditch and keeps the approach end permanently wet. Orange County requirements apply to approaches onto county roads. Crown and side drainage matter as they do anywhere, with the qualification that the ditches here have to connect into a system that is itself tidally influenced, so the drive should shed promptly rather than relying on the ditch to take water away instantly. Where clearing along the alignment is needed, Orange County burn bans and TCEQ outdoor burning rules govern the material.

Why Choose TRP Land Clearing & Excavation in Bridge City?

We check the water table before designing rather than assuming a standard build works here. On this ground it is the factor that decides the approach. We build drives up rather than cutting them in, and we treat separation fabric as standard rather than selling it as an extra. We check the approach culvert on every estimate, since a lot of them here are still carrying flood damage. Free on-site estimate, owner on the machine.

Driveways & Gravel Roads FAQ — Bridge City

Why does my drive stay soft even in dry weather?
Very likely the water table rather than surface water. On the lower parts of this town the water table sits close enough to the surface that the subgrade under a drive can be permanently near saturation regardless of the weather. Draining the surface does not fix that. The answer is building the running surface up above surrounding grade so the base sits above the saturated zone, with proper separation between base and subgrade so the two do not mix.
Should the drive be raised?
On low ground here, usually yes, and it matters more than base depth. A drive cut into the ground on a site with a high water table is a drive built into water, and no amount of material solves that. Raising the profile puts the base above the saturated zone. It also means the drive sheds water rather than collecting it, and it survives a flood event considerably better because water drains off rather than sitting on it.
Is fabric under the base necessary?
On this ground we treat it as standard rather than an upgrade. Geotextile between the subgrade and the base stops the two mixing, and on saturated clay that mixing is exactly how base material disappears into the ground under traffic. It is a modest cost against rebuilding a drive, and on ground with a high water table the mechanism it prevents is not occasional, it is continuous. We will price it separately so you can see what it is, but we will recommend it.
